Diabetes statistics in India

A concise, sourced reference for writers, health educators and anyone looking for the latest published figures on diabetes in India.

Figures on this page are population estimates, not individual diagnoses. Methods and age ranges differ between sources, so each statistic names its source and reference year.

TWO WIDELY CITED ESTIMATES

Why published totals can differ

Diabetes counts are estimates, not a live register. Different studies use different reference years, age ranges and modelling methods. The figures below should be quoted with their source and date, rather than treated as interchangeable.

HOW TO USE THESE FIGURES

Quote the source, date and definition

For a current national estimate

Use the International Diabetes Federation’s 2024 estimate of 89.8 million adults aged 20 to 79, and name the IDF Diabetes Atlas 11th edition, published in 2025.

For Indian study findings

Use the ICMR-INDIAB estimate of 101.3 million people with diabetes and 136.0 million with prediabetes, identifying it as a 2021 projection published in 2023.

For a future outlook

Use the IDF projection of 156.7 million adults aged 20 to 79 by 2050. A projection is not a forecast of any one person’s health.

For personal questions about testing, symptoms or treatment, see the clinic’s guide to blood sugar readings or arrange an appointment.
